Sofala

We managed to hit Sofala at beer-o-clock.  I haven't been to Sofala for a couple of decades but it's a lot nicer than I remember.  The locals at the pub were an interesting bunch - very friendly and quite a few beers under.

Car + Camper - details for the interested

Because some people are more interested in the vehicle than our travels... The idea was that we wanted a vehicle / camper that would go anywhere, comfortably seat and sleep 3 people and stay off-grid for up to a week.  We like to cook/eat outside but have somewhere dry to sleep that could be set up super quickly (ie, <5 minutes). NT - Darwin / Kakadu / Galiwin'ku (Elcho Island) / to WA

It appears the time interval between blog posts is increasing exponentially as we travel around Australia.  If that bothers you, sorry about that. I've divided this one into 4 bits to cover our 8 weeks or so in the NT. Darwin Helen found a 3 week locum position at an Aboriginal Health Service called Danila Dilba in Palmerston (about 25 minutes south of central Darwin).  The intention was to work in a setting that's different to her suburban practice in Sydney and it certainly was.  She loved the experience and learning new stuff about medicine, and this was a great introduction to working in indigenous health.  The job came with accomodation in central Darwin in a serviced apartment and we enjoyed real beds, running water and loads of restaurants. Melbourne to the Victorian High Country

In Melbourne we had a very relaxing time staying with my sister and her family for a few days, caught up with some lovely old friends, and enjoyed good coffee. Compulsory visit to the AFL at the MCG.  An incredibly athletic sport! Slightly suspect action from the boundary umpire. Walking along the bay. Beach huts at Brighton. We missed out on a visit to Wilson's Prom thanks to the tail-end of the rain storms from NSW - gale force winds and driving rain not our preferred option. Another time... So instead we headed north again, to the Victorian High Country and back towards NSW. Our first puncture. On a dirt road, mile from anywhere, we managed to find a gyprock screw. . Fixed the old-fashioned way! Awesome views from the tops of hills.  The vegetation varies enormously from huge gum trees in the valleys to grass and stumpy trees on the high plains, with tiny alpine wildflowers.
